Hey John,

Here is some good "getting started" info. I would start by looking at the Training material

Unity Connection Install and Upgrade Training videos and many others;

http://www.ciscounitytools.com/TOI_CUC701.htm

Overall UC Tools;

http://www.ciscounitytools.com/CUC_2xTools.htm

Cisco Unity Connection

Installation Guide for Cisco Unity Connection Release 7.x

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/connection/7x/installation/guide/7xcucigx.html

Hope this helps!

Dear Rob,

I have seen the video but frankly the presenter is very boring and speaking like someone is pointed a gun on his head :-).

I think i will go with docs and see what i can find there. But for a quick startup pls guide me with the following

I am installing unity connection on vmware. Now how am i supposed to use microsoft outlook ?

1) Do i need exchange server, or standalone outlook will suffice ?

2) Do i need any extra plugin for outlook to work with unity connection ?

Is there any doc or article that details how to use outlook with unity connection ? there was something about viewmail client which i really dont know what it is

Kindly guide me

Hi John,

Hahahahaha!! Very funny reference about the "gun to the head"

I've never installed UC on VMware so I wouldn't be any help to you there

my friend. There seems to be lots of info floating around via any major

search engine though. As for Outlook, you don't need to worry about

it initially as it is really an add-on feature via IMAP to allow users to get

copies of their voicemail in a seperate Outlook email folder. This is where you

are seeing the reference to VMO - View Mail for Outlook. Get the voicemail

part up and running as a good first step and then move on to the more

advanced configs.

Cheers!

Rob - still chuckling!

+5 to Rob for always being the handy quick reference hand with the links.

You do not need an Exchange server to use Outlook.  You can install it this on a PC and use it to establish an IMAP connection.  You do not need any extra plug-ins for Outlook; however, that's essentially what the VMO (ViewMail) application is.  It provides embedded playback controls (primarily) as well as other features.  I will tell you though that if you wish to experiment with any of the forwarding options within CUC - such as Relay or Store and Forward of VM then you will need an SMTP relay server (doesn't matter which type).  CUC can do SMTP within it's own SMTP domain but anything outside that requires an SMTP relay server (called a Smart Host in CUC documentation).

Dear David,

I will be grateful if you can describe, what is VMO and when i will use it ? i mean can i use outlook alone to receive and forward voice mail messages ? or do i need VMO for that ? as you can see i am totally lost here

Kindly guide me

Go here and read up on IMAP setup for various clients including Outlook - it also discusses ViewMail for Outlook (VMO) and has additional links specific to that product.  It is an embedded playback control with other features toolbar application for use with Cisco messaging products.
