Confirnation needed-Default Dial-peer Codec

I had an issue over the weekend hereby calls via a H323 gateway when transferred to a user after terminating on another handset would be cut off or when transferred due to CFNA to Voice Mail . After reading up I discovered I had to ticked MTP on the GW page in CUCM. It seems I required this due to transcoding however though the GW is remote across our WAN we only use G711 throughout our Cluster so I thought I did not need MTP`s. However if I do not hardcode G711 on a dial-peer it uses G729 and so is this the way MTP`s are required due to the default Codec ?

I think g729 is pretty much the default codec:

if you want to force the codec preference, you gotta hard code it on the dial peer or put in place a voice class codec statement
