Determine number of Movi users in TMS

Andrew Vasel

Within TMS, how do you get a count of how many Movi user accounts you have? Within the TMS Phone Books or Phone Book Sources, you can only search up to 999 entries. I know that I have more than 1,000 Movi accounts, but I am trying to find out how to determine what the exact number is.

Hi Andrew,

what you could do is to use some LDAP browser and browse the provisioning databse on the VCS. Under "Users" you will get all the users being provisioned. Now given that you are provisionig Movi clients only that would be your number. I do use Softera LDAP Administrator for better results.

What if your not allowed to install 3rd party software?

Thanks,

Justin

then I think adsiedit.msc is your tool :-)

Interesting, I never thought to use ADSIEDIT, I figured it would only work with AD servers....

I am going to go play with it now

Thanks,

Justin

Is there any guidance on how one would use adsiedit.msc to accomplish this?

to be honnest I have never used adsiedit for anything else but Microsoft AD ,.

I need some time to check if it would work with other ldap db's

The only problem with ADSIEdit is that it is still considered 3rd party software in Windows Server 2003.  Unfortunetly some organizations cannot download even the Microsoft Support tools and install them, which is where ADSIEdit comes from.  Although I guess you could figure out how to get it from one of your AD servers and copy it over.

Anyway, I tried to connect ADSIEdit to OpenDS and could not get it to work.  Seems like ADSIEdit is looking for some AD properties that OpenDS does not have.

Hi Andrew,

Are you importing your users from AD to the Provisioning Directory or are you manually creating them?

Have you considered LDAP Exporter so has to export the data to Excel and then filter from there? And you don't have to connect to the remote TMS Agent db (opends) on the VCS but can connect directly to the Local TMS Agent on the TMS.

Alternatively you can use JXplorer and/or another LDAP browser. However, they're limited to only searching or viewing the data, not exporting it.

Dale,

Thanks for the response. Manual creation of the accounts right now.

Can you expand on how to use LDAP Exporter on the TMS server? Are there any LDAP browsers that are on a server by default, or am I looking at adding to the server to be able to try this?

Thanks,

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

To answer your first question, it's not something that's really supported by Cisco and you have to be fairly knowledgeable/comfortable with the TMS Agent db. If your comfortable and knowledgable here, then I can expand

As to the second question, and if you talking about the Cisco TMS Appliance (Cisco box), no ldap browsers are installed by default.

rgds,

Dale

Dale,

I'm not sure what my comfort level would be, but I would definitely be interested in hearing you expound on it.

Hi Andrew,

Before I 'expound', let me go back to my original question:

Are you importing your users from AD to the Provisioning Directory or are you manually creating them?

And as far as the LDAP browser and/or LDAP exporter, these software tools don't need to be installed to the TMS server. You can install them to your laptop and then simply connect to the TMS Agent db (aka OpenDS) on either the TMS or VCS servers.

So let's start with an answer to my question above...since it's kind of pertinent to what we're talking about here...and then we'll move on from there

cheers,

Dale

Dale,

Unfortunately, we are still manually creating accounts for Movi.

Hi Andrew,

Ok, and since your creating your users manually, then let's "expound"

And again, keep in mind that the tool I'm going to share with your and the related information is completely unsupported and undocumented by Cisco. Therefore, please don't open tickets towards the Cisco TAC asking about this tool and/or the information that is going to be shared here, e.g. ldap queries to the TMS Agent db

And so that you can get what your looking for...which is basically the number of users you have in the Provisioning Directory...I'm only going to take you that far with regards to that particular query.

First, the tool. The LDAP Exporter tool that I use can be obtained from the following link:

http://www.novell.com/communities/node/237

Again, you can simply install this to your PC/laptop.

When you open the tool, which is fairly intiutive, you'll need to first connect to the server (e.g. TMS). To do this, you simply right click over 'Workspace' in the left hand column and then choose 'New Server'. You'll then be prompted to enter the following:

Name: Whatever

Host IP: TMS IP Address or VCS IP Address

Port: 389

SSL: Leave unselected

Base DN: dc=provisioning

User DN: cn= Directory Manager

Password: TANDBERG (this is the default password but if you've changed it, then you should know that)

After successfully connecting to the TMS Agent db on either the TMS or VCS, you should now see the name of the server you created in the left hand column. Next, right click over the server name and select 'New Profile'. Again, give the profile any name you want, e.g. All Users, and then enter the following:

Base DN: ou=users, dc=provisioning

Scope: Single Container

Filter: Leave Blank (the profile will complain about this when you save it, but no worries, the query will run)

Attribute List: cn;givenname;sn;mail;memberOf

Again, when you save it, it will complain about the filter being missing but it will save and you'll then find the profile under the Server name you built earlier. Next, right click over the profile and select 'Run'. A warning will appear stating that the query may take some time to run, i.e. your call but it shouldn't take too long. Select 'ok' and the query will begin to run and the result to include the number of objects (users)...which is what your looking for...will appear in the right hand pane.

And if you like, you can then take the result of this query and export it to an Excel spreadsheet (or to a format of your choice) by selecting Actions > Export Report.

And as you can see, the more your familiarise yourself with the TMS Agent db and understand the information your looking for, then you can create further queries which again you can export to Excel and then utilise Excel tools to create the reports you like. However, and as discussed, this is completely unsupported and undocumented by Cisco. Therefore, please do not raise cases/tickets towards Cisco TAC concerning this tool or creating such queries. Your completely on your own here and do this at your own risk

rgds,

Dale
