PC1 and PC2 are connected to a switch

Will the swicth learn the mac-address and store mac in the mac-address table if PC1 and PC2 don't have any IP Address?

There is no ARP happening and there is no IP traffic between them.

Will a mac-address ping populate the MAC table in the switch?

I don't think the switch will have mac-address in its mac table but I was looking for some document/feedback supporting this

Hi,

as long as the PC will send any L2 frames, they will make the switch to create an entry in its MAC table.

IP addressing is L3 and has no influence on MAC forwarding table.

HTH,

Milan

I don't see any mac-address even after a Layer 2 ping

an exemple: DHCP, when a PC first send a DHCP broadcast how could the DHCP server respond to the PC in unicast because the MAC address is stored by the switch.

What do you call a layer 2 ping?
