Hi,

could you please explain what is the benefit of having CSPS in the network? I'm trying to figure out what is unique feature that CSPS can offer and CUCM can't, especially if we throw some CUBEs too? I'm intentionally using name CSPS to show you I'm not familiar with recent changes but I'm guessing USP is CSPS's successor. Also, some Cisco sales representatives were mentioning that this product will be EoS soon and I will appreciate if you have info about that one too.

Regards,

Tenaro

Hi Tenaro,

Please find the answers inline to your questions:

1. Could you please explain what is the benefit of having CSPS in the network?

[Answer] The CSPS was designed to cater the need of pure SIP networks ex. SIP service providers, which needs SIP Registrar & Proxy server for call routing using SIP standard only.

The Cisco SIP Proxy Server is part of the Cisco Voice Infrastructure and Applications (VIA) solution for service providers. Service providers can use the Cisco SIP Proxy Server to offer voice services between SIP-based application service providers (ASPs) and the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The Cisco SIP Proxy Server also provides residential voice services over broadband access as part of the Cisco Broadband Local Integrated Services Solution (BLISS). Enterprises can use the Cisco SIP Proxy Server for internal IP telephony transit among enterprise voice gateways and SIP-capable IP PBXs, as well as interconnection with the PSTN.

2. I'm trying to figure out what is unique feature that CSPS can offer and CUCM can't, especially if we throw some CUBEs too?

[Answer] When it comes to SIP registration & proxy service, both CSPS & CUCM provide almost the same functionality. However, the CUCM is more rich in features as compared to CSPS & can be used to accompalish lot more tasks other then SIP Registrar & Proxy service. Ex. Extension Mobility. However, this comes with added costs. Therefore as described in the above answer, CSPS is mainly ment for pure SIP networks like the SIP service providers whereas the CUCM is designed to accomplish the Enterprise needs.

3. I'm intentionally using name CSPS to show you I'm not familiar with recent changes but I'm guessing USP is CSPS's successor.

[Answer] CUSP is a different product than the CSPS & is designed for totally different purpose. CUSP is only a SIP Proxy server and does not offer registrar service. However, CUSP has its own benifits & some of them are listed below

§ Simplifies management of large SIP networks – no need for full mesh network configuration

§ Dial plan provisioning, DNS, TLS

§ SIP trunk aggregation (CUCM, CUCME, SP trunks)

§ Flexible routing and normalization policies

§ Load balancing between SIP elements, such as CUBE’s, CME’s

§ High availability

§ Integrated solution in ISR

§Single box

§Eliminates need for separate stand-alone proxy server

§Simplifies management

CUSP 8.5.1 onwards, we can have both CUSP & CUBE or CUSP & CME on the same ISR router, thereby avoiding the need for a seperate CUSP server or router to run the module.

I am also uploading a Video on CUSP Concepts shortly that will discuss this in more detail.

4. Also, some Cisco sales representatives were mentioning that this product will be EoS soon and I will appreciate if you have info about that one too.

The CSPS has already reached the EoL

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/voicesw/ps6788/vcallcon/ps2157/prod_end-of-life_notice0900aecd8057f1a6.html

In regards to CUSP, the latest release CUSP 8.5.2 has been released on "Release Date: 22/APR/2011" & the End of Life announcement is not yet out, as we are still working to add more functionalities keeping in mind the need & demand for this device.

Hi Raees,

very good info on this product

so it is best fit on only sip phones network with basic features [as calls only]

so we don't need to have cisco phones and could have only third party sip phones to lower the cost for the customer ?

or there will be also Cisco sip phones with limited features with lower prices so the customer could compare a cisco sip voip network to the other voip solutions ?

thanks for your valuable info

Hi Hytham,

The CUSP can only work as a Proxy server. Inorder to register SIP Phones, you need a registrar service, which is not possible with CUSP. However, the CUCM can act as a Proxy & Registrar server for phone registeration including 3rd party SIP Phones.

The Cisco Unified SIP Proxy is designed to accomplish different goals & requirement in the SIP network. Below Video should be able to give you more information

If you need more information, please feel free to reach out to me.

Thanks & Regards,

Raees Shaikh

Hi,

We have CUBE, CUSP version 10.x working with UCCE/UC components. As per the following URL https://community.cisco.com/t5/forums/postpage/board-id/3639j-disc-partner-help/attachments-key/f8f06f5a-d8d1-431f-b897-d52134e1ab24, Cisco announced end of support for CUSP v10.x on Sept 30, 2025.

Just wonder what kind of alternative solutions for CUSP 10.x

Thanks,

Joe
