3560G-PoE error

Hey guys

I had a question regarding a switch which is not working properly. Over at the university here last Friday we had a 30-second power outage wreaked a little havoc on our networks. One of the switches did not come back up properly (the 3560G). It keeps failing one of the POST tests, with the output provided below. Most literature I'm reading, especially from Cisco itself, keep stating that POST test failures are mostly hardware failures that cannot be recovered from. However, I've read some things out there about booting into ROMMON mode and re-installing the IOS. So I'm wondering what I should do, should I consider this switch dead and go to technical support? Or is placing a new IOS image file worth a shot?

Thanks

Ehsan

Forgot to mention something. Once is fails that POST test, it will not complete the post process and allow me access to the console. It will keep reloading the switch and try the POST test once again. The IOS image extracts fine, but again it will keep failing POST. It keeps at this circular process.

Hi Ehsan,

You must go to cisco tech now., no other go

Below failure indicates its hardware failure

-------------------------------------------------------

POST: PortASIC RingLoopback Tests : End, Status Failed

POST: port-asic ring loopback test failed

-------------------------------------------------------

Thanks Manju, I feared that would be the case.

Ehsan

hi Ehsan,

If the switch fails POST, the System and Ethernet management port LEDs are amber.

POST failures are usually fatal. Contact your Cisco technical support representative if your switch does not pass POST.

Yes, but does anyone know how to fix these types of problems on your own, without access to Cisco Tech Support?

I have a WS-C3560-48PS with the following indications:

POST: Inline Power Controller Tests : Begin

POST: Found inline power controller write failure, inst 0

POST: Inline Power Controller Tests : End, Status Failed

POST: Inline Power feature is disabled on this switch

...

POST: PortASIC Port Loopback Tests : Begin

POST: Failed PortPhyLoopback Packet Test asic_index 1 port_hardware_index 8

POST: Failed PortPhyLoopback Packet Test asic_index 1 port_hardware_index 9

POST: PortASIC Port Loopback Tests : End, Status Passed

...

%PLATFORM_ENV-3-LOOPBACK_PORT_POST_ERR: Fa0/7 can't be brought up because it failed POST in Loopback test.

%PLATFORM_ENV-3-LOOPBACK_PORT_POST_ERR: Fa0/8 can't be brought up because it failed POST in Loopback test.

Also, Fa0/7 and Fa0/8 are showing amber. The switch does boot up and has normal layer 2 & 3 connectivity.

Is it because Fa0/7 and Fa0/8 are failed that the PoE has failed? Could problems with these two ports cause the PoE to be disabled?

The Cisco guide, Troubleshooting Power over Ethernet (PoE),

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3750/software/troubleshooting/g_power_over_ethernet.html ,

indicates that the PoE section of the power supply could be at fault, if there is no PoE on all or some ports, and the rest of the switch is functioning normally. In this case, a replacement power supply would seem to be in order.

However, I am not sure how or if the failure of the 2 FastEthernet ports 7&8 are confounded with the PoE failure, if at all.

Does anyone have experience repairing such problems?

It's a hardware failure.  You need to get the switch RMA-ed.

I left out the following from the failure indications I just posted:

%ILPOWER-3-CONTROLLER_POST_ERR: Inline Power Feature is disabled on this switch because

Power On Self Test (POST) failed on this switch.

Please consult TECH support for further assistance

Kerry,

Unless you are an electronics expert (which I am not), I recommend you contact Cisco TAC and get the unit RMA-ed.  It's as close as you'll get as a electric-powered door jam with fancy lights.

(Take away the fan and it's a very good floor heater.)
