hi,
had to ask this question already a couple of times but always get confronted with it again and again.
how do i know if a device(switch, router, firewall) needs a smartnet in order to legally download and update the ios.
cause some devices, e.g. switches with lan-base feature set dont need a smartnet as far as i know.
so is there some kind of tool or some kind of trick to check out if i need a smartnet or not?
regards,
florian

In my opinion best way to check is to go to downloads page and try.
See this link, it may help. http://www.cisco.com/web/Downloads/SDS/Software_Downloads/FAQs.html#faq6

IOS update usually requires a support contract unless it is a security fix only or a bug while under initial 90 day warranty. Most products don't enforce via license key but it's still a requirement of the terms and conditions

hi,
thanks for the answer.
this might be good for me, but i cant tell my customers to just try it.
i have to tell them in advance if they need to buy a smartnet with the devices or not.

Always sell SMARTnet!
You have a good point. This would be a good question for your channel account manager.

i know what you mean and i honestly think smartnet is always a good idea, but if your customer asks you "do i need a smartnet, or can i update the ios without as well" its always hard to find out.
cause sometimes you are able to update without and sometimes you need one, but couldnt figure out whats the logic behind it so far.

Know that already, but thanks anyway.
cisco has some helpful tools, no doubt, but there is no tool to clarify the question regarding the smartnet.
or maybe there is and i dont know yet.
