dot1q and 6248 Interconnects Connectivity

Hello,

Is dot1q supported on the 6248 Interconnects? We have a few 3750's and we have FC connected from the 3750's to the interconnects with the following configuration:

Int gx/x/x

Switchport mode trunk

Switchport trunk encap dot1q

Switchport trunk allowed vlan 100,105,110,120,130,140,150

No cdp enable

Int gx/x/x

Switchport mode trunk

Switchport trunk encap dot1q

Switchport trunk allowed vlan 100,105,110,120,130,140,150

No cdp enable

Is this type of connection supported? If so, can someone point me to some documentation.....

Thanks

HX,

NXOS only supports dot1q encapuslation, which it uses by default.

Two comments:

-Is there a reason you're disabling CDP?  It's very useful for t-shooting and is supported on the UCS 6x00 interconnects.

-If you're using the default End Host Mode for switching, then you can also enable Portfast on the 3700 interfaces connecting to the interconnects, since there will be no STP running on them.

Regards,

Robert

SO this configuration will work?

I will talk to the networking guys about CDP?

Should I be in End Host Mode?

Thanks

Yes, your config "should" work, but I can't tell how the other side (UCS) has been configured.  Ensure all necessary VLANs have been created with UCS as well.

EHM is the default operation mode, so unless you purposely switched it, that's what you using.  The only reason to use switch mode (opposite of EHM) is if you're running version 1.4 or earlier and have disjoint layer 2 networks north of UCS.  Otherwise stick with EHM all the way.

Regards,

Robert

Remember to configure your FI ports to 1 gig, any of the 6248 ports are 1 gig capable which is alot more flexable than the 6100's. Maybe time to invest in some N5K's so the UCS can really stretch its legs :-)

Colin

And the "Flow Control Policy", it's at default, is that ok?

Thanks

Yes.  Most of the settings for UCS are optimized as defaults.  So unless you have a specific reason to change them, defaults are your friend

Robert

And we are using the SFP's that came with the UCS, 8G I do believe.

The port on the 3750 doesn't stay up and the light on the interconnect never goes green.........

HX,

There are no 8G ethernet tranceivers.  Those are either 10G SFP+ or 8G FC tansceivers.

Please look at the transceiver and then compare it to the supported matrix

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/hw/switch/install/overview.html

You can log into the UCSM CLI, "connect nxos" and do a "show int x/y tran detail"  This will also get your the PID of the transceiver.  Alternately you can click the port in UCSM GUI and it will tell you the Part ID.

As Colin pointed out, if you've connected a UCS Fabric Interconnect Interface (10G by default) to a 3750 (1G interfaces) you have to change the port speed to 1G.  From UCSM, expand the FI-A/B -> Fixed Module -> Uplink Ethernet Ports and then click on the "Show Interface" link on the right side to adjust the port speed.

Regards,

Robert

Ok so maybe an SFP issue....

Link length supported for 62.5/125um fiber is 70 m

cisco extended id number is 4

FTLF8528P2BCV is an 8GB Fiber Channel tranceiver

FTLF8524P2BNV is a 4GB Fiber Channel transceiver.

You can't uplink an ethernet port on the Fabric Interconnect with a Fibre Channel transceiver.  Those are for the expansion module FC ports only.

The only supported optical ethernet transceivers are:

10GB

SFP-10G-SR

SFP-10G-LR

1GB

GLC-T

GLC-SX-MM

GLC-LH-SM

This is all referenced in the link I posted previously.

Note: To look up what type and speed a Cisco-Finisar transceiver is, go to

http://www.finisar.com/product-finder

So this would work for example:

Ethernet1/29

    transceiver is present

    type is 1000base-SX

    name is CISCO-FINISAR

    part number is FTRJ8519P1BNL-C5

    revision is

    serial number is FNS0940Q0X5

    nominal bitrate is 1300 MBit/sec

Link length supported for 50/125um fiber is 550 m

Link length supported for 62.5/125um fiber is 270 m

    cisco id is --

cisco extended id number is 4

Nope...still an FC transceiver.  A simple google search for "FTRJ8519P1BNL" reveals this...

1000base-SX

is not

a) GLC-T

or

b) GLC-SX-MM

or

c) GLC-LH-SM

I want to connect a 6248 FI to a 6500 using WS-X6716-10GE, what SFP should I use? any help is appreciated.
