lap 1142N not joining WLC2106

Hi,

I have a 1142N which does not join the WLC when connected via a 2960 switch. When I connect a different lap 1142N to the same port on the same switch using the same cables, it does join the lap to the WLC. And when I connect the first lap directly to the WLC it also works fine.

Resetting the failing lap does not fix the problem. All software levels on the lap are the same.

Anyone an idea what could be wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Jeroen

Can you post the output of the console for the AP that is not working when connected to your 2960 while it boots and attempts to discover?

Please also include the following...

Full model number of the AP that is NOT working.

Full model number of the AP that IS working.

WLC platform and version and configured regulatory domain.

Also, is the AP on the same subnet as the management address of the WLC?  If not, what discovery method are you using?  Option 43, DNS, IP-Helper/IP Port Forwarding?

1.  Can you console into the WAP in question and reboot it?  I would like to see the full bootup process and the JOINing attempt process.

2.  Can you post the output to the commands "sh version" and "sh inventory" from the WAP?

3.  From your WLC, can you post the output to the command "sh sysinfo" please?

thnx for your support so far.

All the AP's are the same, AIR-LAP1142N-E-K9 v05. I have two AP's which work fine when connected via the 2960 therefore I assume that the switch, wlc, vlan and dhcp configuration is fine. The thirth one is giving me some challenges ;-)

Note: the non working AP is only not working when connected via de 2960, it is working fine when directly connected to the WLC2106.

@David, where can i find the regulatory domain setting?

Added option 43 to the dhcp scope,

what happens if you move the AP-manager to the same subnet as the management subnet?

Have to check, but i want to keep ap-manager en management separated. Keep in mind that the AP works fine when connected directly to the WLC

that's because it's talking directly to the AP manager and not having to traverse the network.  I've seen issues with spliting the IP address.  and it doesn't explain why some work, and this one doesn't.

It is recommended by Cisco, according to the manual, to separate those two (ap-manager and management)

You need to be careful when you read the manuals. They also stated for years to native the managment traffic AND ONLY now in 7x config guide it was corrected to state TAG the managment traffic.

If you have a 4404 with 100 aps then yes and you would have to add an additional ap manager if you used ports instead of lag. Becuase if you used ports its limited to 48 aps per port!

if you LAG it only uses 1 AP manager and if you use a 5508 there is NO ap mangers.

In your case, you have a small controller. No need to complcate things. Keep them on the same subnet.

Thanks for the output.

How many WAPs are currently JOINED to this WLC?

Thx all for your assistance so far,

I have 2 working AP's connected to my 2960 switches. The third AP does not want to join when connected to the 2960. Even when I disconnect the other 2, it still doesn't want to join. It only joins when connected directly to the WLC.

Option 43 did the trick.

Note: You must use the management interface of the WLAN controller.

Complete these steps in order to configure DHCP Option 43 for lightweight Cisco Aironet access points in the embedded Cisco IOS DHCP server:

  1. Enter configuration mode at the Cisco IOS CLI.

  2. Create the DHCP pool, which includes the necessary parameters, such as the default router and server name. This is an example DHCP scope:

ip dhcp pool network default-router dns-server

  3. Add the Option 43 line with this syntax:

    option 43 hex

The hexadecimal string in step 3 is assembled as a sequence of the TLV values for the Option 43 suboption: Type + Length + Value. Type is always the suboption code 0xf1. Length is the number of controller management IP addresses times 4 in hex. Value is the IP address of the controller listed sequentially in hex.

For example, suppose there are two controllers with management interface IP addresses, 192.168.10.5 and 192.168.10.20. The type is 0xf1. The length is 2 * 4 = 8 = 0x08. The IP addresses translate to c0a80a05 (192.168.10.5) and c0a80a14 (192.168.10.20). When the string is assembled, it yields f108c0a80a05c0a80a14. The Cisco IOS command that is added to the DHCP scope is:

    option 43 hex f108c0a80a05c0a80a14
