AP unable to download the image from 5508 WLC

Unanswered Question
Apr 27th, 2012

Hi,

I have a 5508 WLC connected to 2950 Switch and the LAP 1262 connected to the same default VLAN. My AP's are able to join the controller since they are in the same broadcast domain but They are NOT able to download the image from WLC. When I am looking at the wireless TAB of WLC.. it says... Downloading Image.

Can anyone pls. suggest what all needs to be done to make UP the APs. Also, Following is the error i am seeing at the AP.

This is from a 7.0.220.0 buid, just FYI; don't have a .230 I can show you just yet.  Anyhow, I would still just try re-installing your WLC code

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your reply.

Providing you more information for your guidance.

current controller ios is AS_5500_RTOS-7.2.103.0 and below is the message comes when i tried it to update with .aes.

!!! WARNING updating using .aes or unapproved files will disable this unit !!!

Do you want to update RTOS (y/N)

=================

Pls. suggest what should I do. Should I re-install the RTOS image or should I go ahead with the .aes image after ignoring the warning given.

Amjad Abdullah Fri, 04/27/2012 - 22:31

Harish:

Important: Do not upgrade using .aes from the recovery console!!!! this  will disable your box as per the message you see!! after installing RTOS  image you will be able to configure your box with an IP address and  other basic configuration. Then you need to login to your WLC code  (which will be available normally via CLI and GUI, but APs still can not  connect to WLC). Then from CLI or GUI session upgrade your WLC code to  the normal image

Where did you get the RTOS image from?

This is not the official image to use on your controller. this image is used for recover purposes and does not have AP images so APs will not be able to download its image when this code is used on WLC.

This image used for reocvering flash. when you install it to recover flash and you get the WLC up again you need to install an official supported image from cisco site.

Do not re-install RTOS image because it will not fix the issue. you need to get 7.2.103.0 version (AIR-CT5500-K9-7-2-103-0.aes) and update to this image versoin from normal CLI or GUI session (NOT FROM RECOVERY CONSOLE). I hope this helps.

Let me know if this fixes your issue.

Amjad

wesleyterry Fri, 04/27/2012 - 22:36

and just to be clear:  DO NOT install the .aes image in the location that you are quoting with the RTOS warning.

You should only be doing software upgrades from the GUI  "download file to controller"  section,  or doing the file transfer from the CLI.       The part you are quoting looks like the recovery screen when you escape out of a normal boot section which will brick your 5508 if you use a AES  just like the warning in CAPS is saying....

but anyhow, before even going there,    how about you provide the output of "show sysinfo"  and "show ap bundle primary"

chopra.harish1 Fri, 04/27/2012 - 22:46

Thanks for your inputs Amjad and Wesley...

I am trying the option given by you and get back to you soon...

chopra.harish1 Sat, 04/28/2012 - 00:25

Hi Amjad/Wesley,

Thanks for your valuable suggestion. The WLC has started working and 1 AP has joined the WLC successfully.

Now  another issue is - I have another AP, which I have to deploy in the  above WLC, that AP is not coming up. I tried putting it to the factory  Default but the AP went to Romon state, i guess and just giving the  following

ap :

==========

Can you pls. suggest what should be done in order to make this AP as LAP and to join the WLC. The model is - cisco 1262.

Amjad Abdullah Sat, 04/28/2012 - 00:36

Good news that it started to work.

For the other AP, does it always show you the rommon mode? if you reboot it one more time what does it show?

can you use "dir flash" to show file system?

try the command "boot" it should make it to boot.

let me know if rebooting the device make it to work back to correct mode.

If goes back to normal mode and still not joining WLC, please provide an excerpt from from console output.

From what I see:

%Error opening flash:/update/info (No such file or directory)

ERROR: Image is not a valid IOS image archive.

it seems the image you used for conversion is somehow corrupted or the conversion process was not OK.

Please try to do the conversion again and try.

BEFORE do conversion again try to remove the image from the AP and try to connect it again. what could possibly be corrupted the image the AP got from WLC. if you can remove that image by resetting the AP via the mode button then the image will be deleted and when you connect the AP a new better image will be downloaded from the WLC. Try this option first and if it did not work go for doing the conversion again.

I have the same probleme but I can not access to the web interface controller, I have a problem at ios, bet the initial setup always repeated  without to the bet  configuration web interface.

Scott Fella Tue, 02/18/2014 - 12:05

If the setup always comes up during a reboot, then your WLC needs to be RMA'd.  Nothing you can do to fix that.

Thanks,

Scott

I presume you are on a 7.0+ release or we wouldn't get this far so...

This is usually an indication that the AP image may be corrupted.  I'm not sure what version of code you are running to give you examples of the bundle sizes.

If you are on 7.0.220.0 or later you can run the following command...

(Cisco Controller) >show ap bundle primary

Primary AP Image        Size

----------------        ----

ap3g1                   5984

ap3g2                   7072

ap801                   5284

ap802                   6264

c1130                   5044

c1140                   5092

c1250                   5632

c1520                   6564

c3201                   4392

c602i                   3724

The image AP image you are concerned with here is the "ap3g1" for the 1260 series.  This was taken from a 7.2.103.0 revision (on a 5508, but platform isn't a concern), so your image sizes may be different.  I usually find that the AP Image size for the problem AP model does not match up with that of a "working" WLC, when comparing the same WLC versions of course.

I would suggest re-installing the same version of code again to the WLC as it appears your image may not be complete or is corrupt for the 1260 APs.
