Very frustrated. Another guest / corp lan config question

3 books, 100 hrs of CBT's and a certification and i STILL cant figure out how to set this up right.... i have it "running" with security and everything, but its just not done right. everything is running off the mgt interface.


ok, i work at a cardiovascular practice with 2 locations. what we have is a 2106 WLC and 5 1120(?) Ap's a router on a stick scenario.

our "Main" site uses 172.22.1.0/24 internally

"Site2" used 172.22.2.0/24


I pray someone can explain this to me.... heres what  i'd like to do:


at site 1:

create a guest lan using b/g/n 2.4 that our physicians etc can use that is internet only. (vlan 6 172.22.6.0 and would LOVE to have the WLC do the DHCP)

for this, would i have to change the mgt subnet to /16 instead of /24?


create an a/n 5.0 for our exam rooms and ECG etc equip that is on our internal Lan (No SSID broadcast)


now, i see that i need to create dynamic interfaces (ex: guest and  corp_wlan)... do i assign a vlan, ip's and port to each  interface?   then physically cable from that port to an open port on our switch? and  does that port selection mean i do not need to set up trunking on that  switch port?  i know i will need it on our router as a subinterface, but  thats not a big deal.


how do i add only the b/g/n 2.4 to a particular (guest) interface?

and the a/n 5.0 to the corp_wlan interface?


part 2 of this:


we have 2 locations and the AP's are running HREAP at location 2.  would  i have to have both vlans defined over there if they are connecting  back or would i be able to manage them (the AP's) from site 1 and use  the network at site 2 for their internet and server etc access so they dont have to cross back and use ours?

yes it should be a subinterface added to your router on stick

Hello Tim


Sorry for the inconvenience . Whenever you define A DHCP scope representing certain vlan , the subnet id should be the same for the default router.

In your case you were trying with default router ip not in the same subnet.

172.22.6.0/24 and default router (GW) is 172.22.1.240/24


The gateway should be something like 172.122.6.X/24

THere is no need to change anything the two networks mentioned are completely separate and not overlapping at all.


next time i am in there, i will see where the WLC is wired in and change that port to a trunk on the switch.

after that, all i need to do is add the subinterface and same vlan id to my router and i should be ok on this part?

Well, There is no need to change the management subnet if you need to degfine internal DHCP scope on the WLC.

Make sure that the DHCP proxy is enabled

and under the dynamic interface defined for vlan 6 , put the ip address of the manament interface of the WLC as the primary DHCP server.

There is no need to assign separate port for each interface, have them mapped to port one , connect it to neighbor switch , configure that switchport as trunk allowing all the VLANs needed.

You cannot assign the radio policy based on the interface but you can do it per WLAN.


When you define the WLAN , under the general TAB , Radio policy , you can select the policy needed either g only or a only.

You can enable HREAP local switching per WLAN , under the advanced tab .

When you do so the wlan traffic will be switched be locally at the remote site without the need to be tunneled back to the main controller. In that case you have to make sure that your AP is connected to trunk switch port to allow traffic for more than one wlan locally switched to be switched properly.

but im unable to enable the dhcp scope because of that error.

the mgt interface is 172.22.1.222

our default router (GW) is 172.22.1.240

the guest wlan is 172.22.6.2

the scope i would like to use is 172.22.6.100-200

Sorry for the inconvenience . Whenever you define A DHCP scope representing certain vlan , the subnet id should be the same for the default router.

In your case you were trying with default router ip not in the same subnet.

172.22.6.0/24 and default router (GW) is 172.22.1.240/24


The gateway should be something like 172.122.6.X/24

Thank you for all your help.  One final thing, do you know any good recourses that show best practices, different scenario's etc for setting up a WLAN?  i've read 3 books and countless hours of CBT's but none prepared me for actually getting this setup correctly and working in a production environmant. that was frustrating because i am very interested in the wireless/mobile technology.
