Hello Friends,

i have catalyst 4503 series switch and i am trying to configure it, there is not any physical media connected to the switch yet.

but i have installed the X2-10GB-SM modules in its module (WS-X4606-X2-E)

without any cable or connectivity with other switches.

i am facing the error which is

%SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Te3/1: Rx power low alarm; Operating value: -30.0 dBm, Threshold value: -18.4 dBm.

*Jul 18 07:34:13.710: %SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Te3/2: Rx power low alarm; Operating value: -40.0 dBm, Threshold value: -13.9 dBm.

Hi Waseem,

Even the other release notes 15.x IOS also states the same. You need to seek for the TAC support.

Please check with cisco TAC support it may require a support from engineering team / hardware issue i suspect. Thanks.

Hi,

I had the same issue but what I found out was that there was no link between both switches, either the wrong fiber cable is being used or an incompatible SFP was in use. Check both the cable and SFP and also check the interface for errdissable state, resolve all and you should be good. The other solution would be to admin shut the unused interfaces and that will stop the errors from coming

Hi,

Even I m facing the same issue.

I have change the SFP module, even the port is administratively  shut still errors are coming

Can anyone suggest what is the cause of this error and what is the workaround.

Thanks for your reply Karthikeyan Natarajan

Gents,

Looks like something is amuck as I just received a new 4507 as well and I am getting similar messages. Anyone have an idea as to what is going on?  I too have not connected anything to this yet, just doing a burn in. I am installing into a cancer center and need to have this ready by the first.

regards,

Stephen

I am having this exact issue with my 4507's,4510's. I have 8 and they are all doing this, to make matters worse my 10GB uplink ports are not establishing with a fibre connection(link not connect), using SFP-10GB-LR modules - however as soon as I use a TWIN-AX copper 10gb cable it works perfectly and the threshold violation messages go away...

I am not sure if both issues are related.

To add, the violation messages appear once I actually plug the 10GB SFP modules into the ports on either the supervisory line cards or the 10GB line card.

This is really starting bug me as cisco will not support me because I do not have a support contract. More money that has to be spent!

HAS ANYONE found a resolution to this problem yet???

Remove the SFP from the inactive port on the supervisor. That should resolve the issue.  Admin down the interface does not appear to work

Funny, I've had the same message on my only active sup7L...after looking at it, I realized that the port was shutdown on my distribution switch. So...I have a theory. The switch is not detecting that there is nothing on the other side of the link and is giving us those messages. I would check if the other side of the link is not in admin shutdown and also that the fiber RX and TX link are not inverted.

I have a new pair of 4500x and I ran into the same error message logging to the console.  It appears there is an assumption that if there is an SFP installed and if the port is in a "no shutdown" state that there should be light in both directions.

If you are in the configuration stage, I would suggest either removing the SFP or placing the port into a "shutdown" state to suppress the messages until you are ready to bring up the link.

If you are in an operational state, then you will need to troubleshoot the issue which may be the RX and TX are inverted as suggested above or there are other cable or SFP related issues.

Hi all I have the same problem too on my 4507R with sup7. What is the solution to this problem. Does it effect the switch performance? /--hrl

Hi,

I had the same issue but what I found out was that there was no link between both switches, either the wrong fiber cable is being used or an incompatible SFP was in use. Check both the cable and SFP and also check the interface for errdissable state, resolve all and you should be good. The other solution would be to admin shut the unused interfaces and that will stop the errors from coming.
