Hi all

I would like to know where I can see a trace log if a surten IP phone connects to the CUCM. I have looked in CDR Repord & Analysis and downloaded the Real Time Monitoring Tool. I don't know where to look

Thanks in advanced.

Some other places to look to see if a phone is reaching CUCM would be looking at the CCMAdmin web page, Device > Phone, find the phone you are interested in.  There is a field that says registered, or unknown, or unregistered.  Unknown indicates the device has never reached CUCM, unregistered means the device was registered but is no longer registered, rejected indicates the device connected but there was a security or configuration problem.  Additionally you can look on the phone under Settings > Status > Status Messages to see what the phone is doing.  It's easiest to start there to see if the phone is downloading it's configuration file or not, resolving the CUCM's name if it's a hostname, etc.

You will need to use RTMT to collect log files including SDI and SDL trace files.

Have a look at the link below

You can download the traces using the RTMT tool. You can read up on it here:

The SDI and SDL traces are just text files that can be viewed in a text editor.  Another tool you could use to help parse them would be http://translatorx.cisco.com/ or http://www.employees.org/~tiryaki/tc/

Look for REGISTER messages using the find tool in your favorite text editor.  You should also be able to search by Device Name to find a specific device.  I would just try doing a find for the last 4 digits of a MAC address that is having issues registering.

I have now Collect SDI and SDL trace log files. How do I view them?

The SDI and SDL traces are just text files that can be viewed in a text editor.  Another tool you could use to help parse them would be http://translatorx.cisco.com/ or http://www.employees.org/~tiryaki/tc/

Aa yes they were compressed in gz format Now I'm getting somewhere. But do you know what I have to select for only seeing if a phone register and if dosent for some reason?

Look for REGISTER messages using the find tool in your favorite text editor.  You should also be able to search by Device Name to find a specific device.  I would just try doing a find for the last 4 digits of a MAC address that is having issues registering.

Thank you guys,

So here is what you all learned me.

To see if a phone register or don't I can look here:

  • CUCM->Devices->Phone and look for Phone status if it's registered or rejected.

  • Use RTMT tool to collect SDI and SDL log files and search for phone in the log in a txt editor.

  • Search for specific phone in RTMT tool.

I gues that is how to do it, right?

Thanks

Kristian

Pretty much so. CUCM SDI and SDL logs are used to troubleshoot more complicated issues rather than just registration problems. The traces can be a bit daunting to read. You will need to understand how to read the traces for them to make any meaning.

The book below taught me how to read CUCM traces... If you want to be really good in IPT, you should buy this book. Its the best resource I have ever bought!

Thanks for the tip. Would be very interesting reading.

Do you think I can use it as it only covers up to CUCM 3.3? we are running 8.6?

Yes you can and thats what I still use. I manage a cluster of cucm 8.6 too. The basics are the same. There are some minor variations, but the basics are the same.

You will even learn alot about how to read gateway debugs, which are very useful. Its a very rich book.
