Question Regarding AP Image Pre-download

I'll get straight to the point on this one.  I have 84 LAP1242AG access points and a 5508 WLC.  Currently, the WLC has version 7.4.100.0 set as the primary image with version 7.0.116.0 as the active/default image.  Presently, all APs are running version 7.0.116.0.  I need to upgrade all 84 of the APs as well as the WLC.  Do I use the pre download primary or the pre download backup to push the new image (7.4.100.0) to the APs?  Or, should I just do it the brutal way and reboot the WLC and force the LAPs to rejoin and update the software during the boot process?  I would like to have this project completed by the 23rd.  Thanks!

it won't cause them to reload on there own.  Just schedule the WLC to reboot and it will take care of the AP.

Well the ap will download the new image fro the WLC is is associated to.  SO if the AP moves to another WLC, well the pre-download will not work.  Make sure the primary WLC is set to the WLC that you want to do the pre image download and disable master WLC on any WLC that has that enabled... Make sure the AP stays on the WLC.

Thanks,

Scott

Now will this cause the APs to reboot on their own automatically or will it just download the image to the APs until I manually reset them?

it won't cause them to reload on there own.  Just schedule the WLC to reboot and it will take care of the AP.

Awesome!  Thanks for your quick responses!  Much appreciated!

One last question.  Should I see the new image somewhere in memory for the APs once the pre-download has completed?

you should yes.  just look at Wireless tab it will show you if both images are there as well.

This is what I was afraid of.  When I check it from both the GUI & CLI, I don't see the new image.  All I see is the current image.  I'm wondering if the pre-download is not supported by these APs.  I just tested on one of the APs and this is what I get:

(Cisco Controller) >show ap image scwp6ap09.shepctr.org

Total number of APs.............................. 84
Number of APs
        Initiated....................................... 0
        Predownloading.................................. 0
        Completed predownloading........................ 0
        Not Supported................................... 0
        Failed to Predownload........................... 0

                                                 Predownload     Predownload
AP Name            Primary Image  Backup Image   Status          Version
Next Retry Time  Retry Count

scwp6ap09.shepctr.org 7.0.116.0      0.0.0.0        None            None

Any thoughts/suggestions?

it doesn't look like it initiated.

Completed predownloading........................ 0

so you did:

config ap image predownload primary all

after that you can do a

show ap image all

and see how many have started, are pending and are done.

I don't think you can pre download to those older APs due to the memory. I ran into that issue just a few weeks ago.

Hi

I was speaking to a techie at a local uni, they have found away of upgrading the AP without rebooting it.
I don't know how this is possible.

I was speaking to a techie at a local uni, they have found away of upgrading the AP without rebooting it.

I've been playing with Cisco IOS since 2005 and I have yet to see an appliance get it's IOS upgraded WITHOUT a reboot.

Let me know how it's done because I'm would sure like to know how I'm doing it wrong.

NOTE:  Maybe that techie is getting confused between "loading" an IOS into an appliance and upgrading an IOS.

the 1242 should have enough NV to be able to hold two images.  the 1130 and 1242 are in the list of supported AP, just teh 1230/1200 are not, and they aren't supported on later code anyway.

Now, the AP will reboot when the WLC goes down, so a reboot is needed but it doesn't have to happen immediately.

I've researched this and the 1242s should be able to support predownload.  Am starting to think I need to open a Cisco TAC case on this.

Do you have enough space in flash? Maybe you have multiple images already in flash causing your issue.
