Digit Translation, Why doesn't this work?

I see on several sites a simple digit translation command and they say it works but when I enter it into my 2610XM (CME 4.0.1.0) amd my 2851 (CME 8.6), they both get me the error below.

Command:

     LAB_2610XM(cfg-translation-rule)#rule 1 /2535551.../ /4.../

Error

LAB_2610XM(cfg-translation-rule)#rule 1   /2535551.../  /4.../

                                                                                 ^

% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

If I remove the wildcard it works fine.  But if an 11 digit number I get a 5 digit result.  Am I doing something worng or arre the websites wrong? Or, is this command for CUCM only?

If I enter the command:

rule 1   /2535551.../  /7/

it works but my results are:

Original number: 2535551000     Translated number: 7

Original number type: none      Translated number type: none

Original number plan: none      Translated number plan: none

As you can see, my last three digits do not come over in the translation

(Without testing) I believe it should be (using number slicing):

rule 1 /^253551\(...\)/ /4\1/
