hai,

I have 3 different types of access points.

Cisco 1252, Cisco1142 and cisco 3602.
I have cisco wism WLC and 8500 WLC....

Cisco 1252, Cisco1142 will associate with Wism wlc and cisco 3602 ap should associate with 8500 wlc

What is the recommended methods to associate this APs to WLC

Do I need to configure two different DHCP pool ?

Thnaks in advance

It depends. If your wcs are all part of the same mobility group then you would go to each ap and assign the primary and or secondary wlc. You can use option 60 along with option 43 for specific APs to find the wlc or you can use DNS to have it join a wlc and then manually move it to the preferred wlc.

Thanks for your reply.

as an example can I do like this ?

create a pool for the ap's 1522,1252,1142

ip dhcp pool DHCP1

network 10.68.81.0 255.255.255.0

default-router 10.68.81.254

option 43 ascii "10.68.82.10,10.68.82.9, 10.68.82.8, 10.68.82.7,10.68.82.6 "

dns-server 10.68.80.50

option 60 ascii -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------??????????????

When using an IOS DHCP scope, Do we need to specify an option 60 OR  can specify only the option 43???

create another pool for the ap's 3600

ip dhcp pool DHCP2

network 10.68.83.0 255.255.255.0

default-router 10.68.83.254

option 43 ascii "10.68.83.10,10.68.83.9"

dns-server 10.68.80.50

option 60 ascii "cisco AP 3600'

My question is  it possible to use the same pool for all accesspoints ?

OR i shpould follow the below..

Configure a pool for 1 type of AP and after the AP association configure the primary and secondary WLC on AP setting

and do the same for all APs

Which is the best recommended way ?

Here is the thing... If your AP's, the 1252 and 1142 are already joined to the WiSM, then you don't have to do anything. Now if you have a new 8500 and also 3602's and you want then to join the 8500, then just create a DNS entry for cisco-capwap-controller pointing to the 8500 management IP address. This way when a new ap boots up, it will look for that DNS and if found, will join the new 8500. Option 43 and DNS is really only used for the initial join. Once APs have joined, you can always use the high availability setting on each AP to have then know of the primary, secondary and or tertiary wlc's.

Dear  scott,

We can consider it completely as a new infrastrecture....

Is it possible to add multiple "option 60 ascii" in one DHCP pool ?

Total I will have 2 wism (means,4 WLCs)----------for  1522,1252,1142 aps

and

1 8500 WLC and one High availability WLC ----for 3602

Whats is the best recommended way ?

Am I able to add multiple DNS entries with this name cisco-capwap-controller.localdomain. ?

Thanks and Regards

Deva

Don't make it harder than it is... Is your WiSM and the older 1252 and 1142's not up already?

You can add as many options 60's as you wish and add as many DNS entries for a record. I don't do it that way, but its up to you. I will have APs join a WLC and then assign them after. If you want to understand option 43/60, here is a good link.

The need to configure two different DHCP pool depends upon the Mobility groups. You can assign them to primary or secondary WLC using option 60 or 43 to find WLC.

When a Cisco Wireless Unified architecture is deployed, the lightweight Cisco Aironet access points (AP) can use a vendor-specific Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) Option 43 to join specific Wireless LAN Controllers (WLCs) when the WLC is in a different subnet than the LAP. This document describes how to use DHCP Option 43 and provides sample configurations for DHCP Option 43 for lightweight Cisco Aironet (APs) for DHCP servers.

Dears,

Thanks alot for your update.

Can I configure like this?

ip dhcp pool APMGMT

   network 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0

   default-router 192.168.1.1

option 60 ascii "Cisco AP c1142,Cisco AP c1252,Cisco AP c3500"

   option 43 ascii "192.168.1.5"

  dns-server 192.168.1.7

Now 3 AP types are into the same pool

Can I create DNS entry like this cisco-capwap-controller

My DNS is 192.168.1.7.

"CISCO-CAPWAP-CONTROLLER.name.com 172.31.3.5"

Is it correct ?

Thanks a lot for you guidance and advice
