Cisco 1142 - WLC 5508

Hi All,

Having an issue with AP 1142N, attached to WLC 5508.

Initially configured the AP with IOS c1140-k9w8-tar.152-4.JA1.tar though all other AP's in the network are running12.4 version. Decided to change the OS from 15.2 to 12.4.

Migrated LWAPP to IOS which worked fine and AP become Autonomous.

However, when I try to migrate (IOS to LWAPP)  with c1140-rcvk9w8-tar.124-23c.JA7.tar, the AP goes through all the processes gets reloaded and comes back with 15.2 image.  Not sure where it is picking up the image from. I want to remove the image from WLC and get this AP in 12.4 only. Does anyone faced this issue before, could you provide me help to resolve this please.

Regards,

Srini K

Why do you want to your LWAPP to have 12.4 ?  What's the problem of your LWAPP getting 15.2 ?

The image use for conversion is just recovery image just to enable AP to register for a WLC. Once register WLC will push the complete image for AP to download.

Rasika, thanks for the reply. I've got 5 WiFi profiles on our WLC. While on 15.2, the AP is getting only one of those 5.

All other AP's (14) are currently running 12.4 which picks up all the 5 profiles. This is the reason I want to move it back to 12.4

That cannot be AP image related. What are the WLAN ID used for those profiles ? Are you using AP-group to control SSID advertisement or everything in default-apgroup ?

That might be the issue of upgrade to 15.2 Please send a copy of config for proper view of the problem.

However, when I try to migrate (IOS to LWAPP)  with c1140-rcvk9w8-tar.124-23c.JA7.tar, the AP goes through all the processes gets reloaded and comes back with 15.2 image.  Not sure where it is picking up the image from.

See the filename with a prefix "RCV"?  It's called a "Recovery" file.  I'd like to call this as a "lite" IOS.  It's designed to be used by APs to operate in a BASIC status.  It is NOT designed to operate in production.  The main function of the RCV file is to FIND the WLC.  Once the AP is able to join to a WLC, the WLC will then push the correct or "full" IOS down to the AP.

It doesn't matter if you manually upload the full IOS to the AP, at the end of the day, the WLC will decide which IOS your AP should use (in a controller-based environment).

So don't even bother deciphering why your controller-based AP is using 12.4 or 15.0 IOS as it won't make any difference.

Thanks for the message Leo.

I know about the lite IOS. The problem here is none of my other AP's (most same models) receive 15.2 except the problamatic one.

Even I thought it wouldn't make any difference, but while on 15.2 the AP couldn't see any more than 1 WiFi profile. Not sure if its a bug or some configuration issue. Remaining 14 AP's in my network connected to the same WLC, works fine with all 5 profiles (Running 12.4)

What everyone is saying is that the WLC provides the firmware to the access points. Post a screen shot of what your seeing.

This has got NOTHING to do with whether or not your AP is running 12.4 or 15.0 so you need to refrain from thinking this is the case.  (You confuse people who don't know/read and they will start posting recommendatations that doesn't make sense or relevance.)

It sounds like you've got issues with your AP Groups configuration.

Post the output to the command "sh wlan apgroup".

  • Cisco Employee,

Have you used upgrade tool method or the archive-download method??

If upgrade tool have you checked for any errors during conversion and have you tried the other method??

Cisco recommends to clear the configuration before you convert an AP to
LWAPP.

Then clear all config and only leave env_vars and the IOS image in flash:.
You can then upgrade again.

These tips can be used when you upgrade from autonomous to LWAPP       mode:

  • If the NVRAM is not cleared when the controller tries to write to it           after the conversion, problems are caused. Cisco recommends to clear the           configuration before you convert an AP to LWAPP. In order to clear the           configuration:

    • From the IOS GUI—Go to System Software > System             Configuration > Reset to Defaults, or Reset to Defaults             Except IP.

    • From CLI—Issue the write erase and             reload commands at the CLI and do not allow the             configuration to be saved when prompted.

This also makes the text file of APs to be converted by the Upgrade             Tool more simple to create as the entries become ,Cisco,Cisco,Cisco.

  • Cisco recommends that you use the tftp32. You can download the latest           TFTPD server at http://tftpd32.jounin.net/ leavingcisco.com.

  • If a firewall or an access control list is enabled during the upgrade           process, the upgrade tool can become unable to copy the file that contains           environmental variables from a workstation to an AP.

If a firewall or access control list blocks the copy operation and           you select the Use Upgrade Tool TFTP Server option, you cannot proceed with the           upgrade because the tool cannot update the environmental variables, and the           image upload to the AP fails.

  • Double check the image you are trying to upgrade to. The upgrade from           IOS to LWAPP images is different from the normal IOS images.

Under My Documents/My Computer--> Tools--> Folder Options, make           sure you uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types check box.

  • Always make sure to use the latest available Upgrade Tool and Upgrade           Recovery Image. The latest versions are available in the Wireless Software           Center.

  • An AP can not boot a .tar image file. It is an           archive, similar to zip files. You need to unbundle the .tar file into AP flash with the archive download command, or else pull the bootable image out of the tar file first then put the           bootable image into AP flash.

Thanks Jha, I used archive-download method. Infact I went to a level of doing factory reset on the AP.
