Layer 3 Switch functionality

Ricky S

Hi all, I have a Cisco 3560x-24 switch that I use as the core at one of my offices. Until now I didn't need any routing protocols on this switch and had a bunch of static routes. However now due to some requirements, this switch must advertise it's static routes via EIGRP to an adjacent router who then in turn advertises them onto others. This route advertisement works perfectly. All my other routers (approx. 70) can see the static (external) routes advertised by the core switch.

Below is a sh ver and sh license from the switch. It seems, from the output below, switch is running ipbase license. Could this cause any issues with traffic flow? Reason I am asking is that at some of my offices, I have intermittent issues while connecting to destinations whose static route is being advertised by this switch. Routing stays fine, as the routers at all other offices know about the destination however they intermittently loose connectivity.

Please advise

Hi,

The licensing has nothing to do with the switch having intermittent issues while connecting to other destinations.

Your license is IP based.  Usually, with IP Base license level you can run static router and EIGRP.  If you need OSPF, BGP etc.... you would  need IP Services license. You need to look at your at other area of your network to figure out what caused the issue.

Have a look at table-2 in this link:

Thank you for the clarification. Much appreciated.

Hi Ricky,

Reza Sharifi is correct. This could not, in anyway be related to your license.

If you would like to troubleshoot the intermittent issues however, you can check the path on where packets are going from source to the static routes that you have.

A good start would be to ping from that switch going to the static route destinations, check the interfaces (show int) for any input/output/crc errors, etc). show log and show proc cpu history are also useful commands for checking hardware and resource capacity related issues.

Hope this helps.
