Difference between s0/0/0 and s0/0/0:0?

On Cisco 29xx routers, I saw serial interface in different naming conventions (depending on the interface card, such as HWIC or VWIC).

Some are named s0/0/0.  Some are named s0/0/0:0.

Why is the difference?

I know what HWIC and VWIC is.

My question is: why S0/0/0:0 versus S0/0/0?  What does the column sign and the number following mean?

For some of the cards you configure the controller (with things like specifying the time slots and giving the channel an identifying number). For these you have the serial0/0/0 and add the : to specify the appropriate channel number. For other cards you configure only the card and not the controller and for these there is no :
