Hello,
is it possible to obtain a serial-over-LAN connection using plain IPMI? I was trying using the ipmitool sol activate and I get "Error activating SOL payload: Invalid data field in request".

SSH was concieved as way you access SOL, not to require any additional tools.

I assume you referring to SoL for host OS.
As Marcin, pointed out, IPMI SoL is not available and you need to SSH into CIMC and access SoL terminal.
May be we could better understand the issue if you can share your requirement.
