new 5508 controller installation and setup

Hello all,

I hope I am posting this in the right area.

I have a new 5508 controller that I am working to get up and running. I will be connecting 2602 APs and am thinking that I have either missed a concept or missed a step in the configuration. I have the controller up and running on teh network. It is connected to the core switch using port 1 as a trunk port. I also created a seperate VLAN for the APs with DHCP but have been unable to get it to connect to the 5508 controller. I dod not configure anything on the controller before powering it up. I reading through the gonfiguration guide there is a reference to not having to create an AP management interface but also a recommendation to create AP management on each of the 8 interfaces on the controller. I have an AP management interface configured on teh controller and it has an IP address from the VLAN created for the APs.

What did / am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Brent,

In 5508, you do not require AP-Manager interface to be configured. Management interface will act as AP-Manager interface for AP to join.

What is your WLC managment vlan ? Lets say if it is 100 (192.168.100.100/24 with gateway 192.168.100.1) then you should have configured it like this (via WLC console ). So your WLC & switch port (WLC & AP connected) should be like this. Pls check

(WLC) >config interface address management 192.168.100.100 255.255.255.0 192.168.100.1

(WLC) >config interface vlan management 100

SW#

int Gig x/x

desc WLC Trunk

sw trunk encapsulation dot1q

sw mode trunk

spanning-tree portfast trunk

int Gig x/y

desc AP

sw mode access

sw acc vlan 32

spanning-tree portfast

If your configuration is like above, you should be able to ping WLC mgmt from the AP itself. Try to test the registration you can statically configure the WLC mgt IP on the LAP by using the below command on AP CLI.

LAP#capwap ap controller ip address 192.168.100.100

Refer this post for more on AP registration & other method of controller discovery/etc. These posts are based on WLC7.0.116.0 code & you may see little bit different GUI if you using later codes.

Thanks Rasika I will go back and double check what I have configured. I do not have any issues connecting to the WLC either with the CLI or the GUI. One other item. Will the AP management matter if I will eventually be controlling APs over the WAN?

I think I missed some fine print on the WLC configuration. I connected to an AP and received the following. It looks like I might need to tweak the DHCP configuration on my core switch for the AP VLAN and create a specific DNS entry for the WLC so that the AP can find it?

Hi Brent,

Will the AP management matter if I will eventually be controlling APs over the WAN?

No, you can have AP on different layer 3 network. Only requirement is AP should have L3 reachability to your WLC mgt IP.

It looks like I might need to tweak the DHCP configuration on my core switch for the AP VLAN and create a specific DNS entry for the WLC so that the AP can find it?

Did you try "capwap ap controller ip address " command on your AP & see if it register. In this way you can quickly test your WLC config is ok.

Yes, to discover WLC you can either configure DHCP option 43 or Register  your WLC mgt IP for the  DNS entry of "CISCO-CAPWAP-CONTROLLER.spd.mli.corp".

Also make sure your WLC is sync with a NTP & correct country code to match the regulatory domain of your APs configured on it.

Can you ping the IP address of the management IP address of the WLC?

How is the link between the AP and the WLC like?  For the sake of this issue, can you ensure both the AP and the WLC are in the same VLAN and subnet?   It doesn't matter if the AP can't get a valid IP address, this can be addressed manually.

Leo,

I have not tried to ping the all interfaces on the controller from the controller itself. The controller is connected to a trunk port on my sore switch and the AP is connected to a distribution switch off that same controller.

I have an AP-management interface in the same VLAN (VLAN32) as the AP and the controler management interface is in my network hardware VLAN (VLAN5). You are saying to see what happens when I move an AP into VLAN 5?

Nope.  I am suspecting you've got a routing issue somewhere in your network, hence I'm recommending you put the AP and the Management IP Address of the WLC into the same VLAN.

If you get the AP to join the WLC with this method, it only helps to prove that you've got a routing issue or a firewall issue.

Hi Brent,

Looks like you have configured DHCP Option 43, but controller IP address AP getting is wrong. As per your "show sysinfo" output 5508 mgmt is 172.16.5.110. So your DHCP option 43 to be configured to give this address as WLC IP. Pls correct that & see.

I have noticed this couple of times when I used USB-Serial cable to console in. When I change the USB port in my laptop end most of time it get fixed.

It looks like changing the Option 43 to use the controller IP address did the trick. I still do not see a reason then for the AP-management interface? It looks like I still have a few more items to tweak to getting everything setup.

Hi Brent,

Glad you got it working

I still do not see a reason then for the AP-management interface? It looks like I still have a few more items to tweak to getting everything setup.

As I stated earlier, for 5508 controller WLC management interface will act as AP-Manager interface & hence you do not want to configure AP-Manager interface.
