Can autonomous and LAPs co-exist?

I have an existing roaming 2.4 wireless network which consists of 4 autonomous 1242 APs. I need to expand the coverage area.

Can I add a controller and LAPs with the same SSID and expect my clients to roam from the autonomous AP to the LAP?

Or do I need to replace the 4 1242s with LAPs?

You do not want to mix them. If you get a WLC, then you can convert the autonomous AP's to lightweight.
