purpose of blue identification LED

I am a tech writer and am writing a troubleshooting section which involves the ACS 3415. All Cisco documentation just says the Identification LEDs "illuminate when the LED is on" - ok, but what is it identifying? Is it showing the identification switch is on, and if so does that really serve any purpose during troubleshooting?  Thanks for any help!
