IGMP Querier configuration

Hi everybody,

I have a question about the configuration of IGMP querier. I have a small setup with 3 cascaded switches and a querier configured on the "Main switch" (where SVI are configured). I would like to know if the IP address of the querier need to be configured on all switches (with the command:  ip igmp snooping querier address xxx) or if access switch will automatically learn the querier ip address?

does someone can send me the minimum required for IGMP querier configuration? (No need multicast-routing and pim configuration. Just querier)

Many thanks,

Greg.

Hi,

You can but there is no need to configure querier statically.  The hosts will join and leave dynamically.

Not sure what type of switch you are using but here is the config guide for the 3750 series.

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3750/software/release/12-2_52_se/configuration/guide/3750scg/swigmp.html#wp1025709

Hi,

Actually, the Core switch is a Catalyst 6500 series and we have 2 x 2960X connnected behind.  But the setup can change and the core switch can be a Catalyst 3850 or 4500X. Is there any differences between the models for this kind of configuration?

Thanks,

Greg.

Hi,

The command/config could be different because for example 6500 run IOS but 4500x runs IOS-XE.  So, you would have to look at the spesific config guide for that platform.

I think I recall, on multicast featured L3 devices, you enable PIM on the interface to enable the IGMP querier.

I think I also recall, some L2 switches provide an IGMP querier, that you can enable, when there's no multicast GW device.
