Check for Available Fiber/SFP Ports on 4507R?

Matthew Martin

Hello All,

Switch:  WS-C4507R-E

Supervisor Slots:

NAME: "Supervisor(slot 3)", DESCR: "Supervisor 6L-E 10GE (X2), 1000BaseX (SFP) with 2 10GE X2 ports"
PID: WS-X45-SUP6L-E , VID: V04 , SN: **********
NAME: "Supervisor(slot 4)", DESCR: "Supervisor 6L-E 10GE (X2), 1000BaseX (SFP) with 2 10GE X2 ports"
PID: WS-X45-SUP6L-E , VID: V04 , SN: **********

The Supervisor slots are the one's containing the Fiber/SFP ports. At the moment only the Supervisor in slot 3 is "Active", and the one in Slot 4 is the "Standby". I haven't worked much with the SFP ports so I was hoping someone could help me identify if there are any open ports?

Here is a screenshot from the Cisco Network Assistant app showing the Supervisor slots from the Front Panel view of the 4507R.

Here is the show int status output for slots 3 and 4.

#show int status | inc Gi[3-4]
Gi3/3 connected trunk full 1000 1000BaseSX
Gi3/4 notconnect 1 full 1000 No Gbic
Gi3/5 inactive 1 full 1000 No Gbic
Gi3/6 inactive 1 full 1000 No Gbic
Gi4/3 notconnect 1 full 1000 1000BaseSX
Gi4/4 notconnect 1 full 1000 No Gbic
Gi4/5 inactive 1 full 1000 No Gbic

If you need any other commands just let me know...

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks in Advance,
Matt

It appears that you are using the X2 TwinGig converters that allow you to use the 10 Gbps ports as 2 each 1 Gbps ports.

Here's what they look like: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-3750-e-series-switches/product_data_sheet0900aecd805bbee3.html

"show inventory" should confirm their presence.

As the interface status shows, there are two 1000BaseSX transceivers installed (one in each supervisor) and only one of them (in slot 3/3, the leftmost port) has an active link.

Hey Marvin, thanks for your reply!

Below is the show inventory output from the 4507R...

And here is a screenshot of the Inventory window from Cisco Network Assistant. Seems as though there are 4 SFP modules, does that sound correct?

Thanks again for your reply, much appreciated!

Thanks,Matt

Your "show invenstory" output is from a different 4500 - a 4510R (not a 4507).

The inventory window shows converter modules, two in each supervisor (slots 3 and 4). It does not show any SFPs. (CVR-X2-SFP is the converter only - the actual SFPs are separate parts).

Woops, sorry that was for a different location.

I've edited my original response to show the correct 4507R now... Thanks for pointing that out.

Thanks Again,
Matt

Yes your edited inventory shows the expected converter modules and SFPs. The output does not distinguish that a single converter module spans two interfaces; but we know that from a priori knowledge about the part's physical characteristics.
