UCS 5108 - Move Fiber Channel to new FC Switches

We have 4 UCS 5108 chassis (fw 2.2.2c) and 2 - 6120XP FI's. The four FC ports on each FI are plugged into separate Cisco 9148's. These 9148's were also connected to our EMC VNX 5500. We recently installed and moved all LUN's/Filesystems to a new VNX 5400 connected to two new 9148S fiber switches which are also connected via ISL to the older 9148's. So the current fiber channel path for the UCS is to the old 9148's then through the ISL to the new 9148's to access the VNX. I would like to move the connections from the old 9148's to the new.

I know that the UCS has redundant paths to the 9148's. Is it just simply a matter of moving the B interconnect ports to the new 9148's and then failing over to the B interconnect so I can move the A interconnect ports to the new switch? Simple diagram attached.

Greetings.

Assuming that zoning/vsan configuration is fine on new 9148s, and your multipathing is healthy on your blades/OS, then that should work ok.

You can also disable your Server's vHBAs (from equipment Tab) on the FI side you want to do the maintenance on to confirm your other side /multipathing is functioning prior to pulling cables.

Thanks,

Kirk...

Thanks Kirk! Yes the zoning/vsan config is all set on the new switches. Is there a way to tell whether the B FI is the active path for any of the chassis/blades or would simply disabling the vHBAs simply fail the traffic to the A FI?

Thanks again.

Scott

That is something you generally would check through your OS.

If your OS doesn't have metrics/counters showing the multipathing, then you could check the FI performance counters.

The HA functionality of the UCSM Primary/2ndary roles is independent of the dataplane.

You will really want to confirm your multipathing for storage at your OS level to get a good sense of which side is active (if not both).

Thanks,

Kirk
