Understanding the question, you are asking if SPAN sessions work like wireshark. Well SPAN sessions are used to identify the kind of traffic passing through a VLAN, access port (s) or trunk interface(s) but you cannot see this traffic unless you are using a sniffer software like Wireshark or PRTG or others.
SPAN and Wireshark (sniffer) can have the same purpose but in order to read the SPAN info you need a sniffer.

Yes, you span a port and than you use wireshark to read/see the output.
