Changing a serial connection to DCE for sna

Hi All

I have configured sna before and have in the past connected the sna controller to the router with a db60 to rs-232 cable. This seems to work ok on a 2600 and this is the output I have from sh int

Serial0/1 is up, line protocol is up

Hardware is PowerQUICC Serial

MTU 1500 bytes, BW 1544 Kbit, DLY 20000 usec,

reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255

Encapsulation SDLC, loopback not set

Router link station role: PRIMARY (DCE)

Router link station metrics:

slow-poll 10 seconds

T1 (reply time out) 3000 milliseconds

N1 (max frame size) 12016 bits

N2 (retry count) 20

poll-pause-timer 10 milliseconds

poll-limit-value 1

k (windowsize) 7

modulo 8

sdlc vmac: 4000.9999.01--

sdlc addr C1 state is CONNECT

cls_state is CLS_IN_SESSION

VS 3, VR 3, Remote VR 3, Current retransmit count 0

Hold queue: 0/200 IFRAMEs 299475/309678

TESTs 0/0 XIDs 0/0, DMs 0/1 FRMRs 0/0

RNRs 8994503/0 SNRMs 230/0 DISC/RDs 38/0 REJs 0/0

Poll: clear, Poll count: 0, ready for poll, chain: C1/C1

This 2600 router connects ok, but at the moment, I am trying to connect a 3600 router to a controller although the controller is not connected yet. When I do a sh int on the 3600 I get

Serial1/3 is administratively down, line protocol is down

Hardware is M4T

MTU 1500 bytes, BW 2048 Kbit, DLY 20000 usec,

reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255

Encapsulation SDLC, crc 16, loopback not set

Router link station role: PRIMARY (DTE)

Router link station metrics:

slow-poll 10 seconds

T1 (reply time out) 3000 milliseconds

N1 (max frame size) 12016 bits

N2 (retry count) 20

poll-pause-timer 10 milliseconds

poll-limit-value 1

k (windowsize) 7

modulo 8

sdlc vmac: 0000.0000.00--

Last input never, output never, output hang never

Last clearing of "show interface" counters 00:33:01

Queueing strategy: fifo

Output queue 0/40, 0 drops; input queue 0/75, 0 drops

5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec

5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec

0 packets input, 0 bytes, 0 no buffer

this shows the int as dte where as on the one above shows dce. When I try to enter the "clock rate" command to issue the clock rate I get "%Clock rate is ignored on DTE interfaces. ". How do I change this to dce, does the controller have to be connected first or is there a command for this. I didnt seem to need to do this for the working 2600, I just enter the clock rate command and it worked fine. Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards

Karl,

For starters your 3600 s1/3 says it is Administratively down, you will need to do a 'no shut' on the interface to begin.

For the DCE/DTE it is based upon the cable type. Cisco can sense which pins are wired up when you plug the cable in. You currently have a DTE cable plugged into the router. You will need to go and purchase a DCE cable.

Hi Ron

That is perfect.. I will go and purchase one... thanks for the answer.
