Hi,

Can anyone suggest a small Windows based Network Documentation software which support network visual view and device (routers, switches, links ... etc) function descriptions.

Thanks

Muhanna

Not sure what you mean by "small", but Visio is the industry standard. If you wish to exchange layout information with other engineers, visio is what they will be using.

I have a network documentation project(physical and logical). The environment has 100 server, 15 swithces, 15 printers, etc which has 5 racks. My challenge will be trying to following cables, for example, on port 5 of a Cisco switch which is bundled with other cables. Any suggestions for this? Cisco Network Assistant might help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Before physically tracing wires, you might try looking at the switch MAC address tables.

So spit out the MAC address for each switch/router and match that with MAC address of servers/computers?

Not just each switch, but each switch port. The Mac addresses are specific to a port, so you can tie a server to a specific switchport.

I will do that. Can you please suggest any Cisco tool/any tool to make this easier?

Try Network Notepad it is a great tool to visually map your network and has pretty cool features.

I'm putting together a logical network diagram that includes routers/swtiches and port connection for each port. Any suggestion on how I can do this without for each switch port to ensure it makes sense but not too disorganize?

Consider a layered approach.

1. physical. rack row slot/port cable

2. layer 2, vlan spanning treee

3. layer 3 IP relationships.

I started looking at this example - http://www.ratemynetworkdiagram.com/?i=18584 - but it will have more connections per switch. As a result, it maybe too disorganize. Other pictures I'm considering:

For network documentation Microsoft Visio and Network Notepad are the best toll. You can work with these.
