traceroute udp

Unanswered Question

I noticed from a sniffer trace that traceroute is sending the request in UDP and the response is simply ICMP.

What would be the advantage of UDP in this case.

If I issue a traceroute fram WIN95, it is ICMP all the way.

I have this problem too.

You can define port number if you use extended trace on cisco.

if you use traceroute on unix or similar os they use udp 33434 for traceroute

windows use 33434tcp for traceroute
