Using the <tt>backup interface</tt> Command to Assign a Backup Server

I have a cluster server with one primary server and one secondary server. Both servers are connected to serial ports on a Cisco 1720 router running Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0. I would like the serial port connected to the secondary server to act as a back up to the primary server (connected to the other serial port). Can I do this by using the backup interface command? Are there other commands I need to use in addition to the backup interface command?

Yes, you can use the backup interface command to allow the secondary server to act as a backup for the primary server. This means that the primary interface has to go down (for example, if there is keepalive failure, or if the Data Carrier Detect (DCD) signal goes down) in order for the backup interface to come out of STANDBY mode.
