gradual supII failure on cat4k

I wondering if anybody else has seen the symptoms I've seen below:

The symptoms we see are intermittent chronic slowdowns and connectivity

failures on the LAN, which seem to start and stop for no apparent reason.

Logging on to the switch to view errors as they happen and looking at

logging buffers shows MAC addresses flapping between seemingly random ports,

which may or may not have devices connected to them. Shutting down these

ports gets rid of the errors coming up on the screen, however after a time

the errors move to other ports and the slowdowns/connectivity failures

continue. On both occasions I have seen this a reboot was atempted,

initially with no apparent difference, however on both occasions a

subsequent reboot showed the supervisor engine as being faulty and failing

at the Power on self test.

In both cases we already had a support engineer on site looking at the

switch at the time the supervisor engine failed (i.e. the switches were

under maintenance and we had logged a call).

What software version are you running on the CAT4k's?. Make sure you are running 5.5(15) if you are in 5.x train or 6.3(7) in the 6.x train. The newer CAT OS has lot of bug fixes and does a better job in doing isolating bad/flaky hardware. Also look at the bugs discussed in the following field notice

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/770/fn14464.shtml

I believe it was either 5.5(4) or 6.1(2).

I'll probably investigate upgrading the software in all our 4k's, since we probably have 100+ in our WAN.

my 4006 mod 1 sup II shows this

Hw : 3.2

Gsp: 6.1(3.0)

Nmp: 6.1(3)

Should I upgrade my firmware?

Yep. Latest 6.3(x) maintenance release is the way to go. It has lot of bug fixes. 6.3(7) is the latest we have
