ISDN Dialup error: PPP: Missed 5 keepalives, taking LCP down

Unanswered Question
Jul 22nd, 2002
User Badges:

This error only occurs on certain ISDN TA's. The multilink comes up but then times out after 90 seconds. None of the timer settings make a difference.

Following is the debug output.

I can't explain why it's different with different TA's, but I would suggest you configure the keepalive timer on the physical interface instead of the dialer. You might also ensure that you have fairly recent code; I don't see a cisco bug that matches what you are seeing, but newer code may help (in addition to the config change). Note that, in general, a keepalive of 3600 is almost worthless. This means that 5 hours will go by before we signal a problem with the link, should there be any. The keepalive packet is small and insignificant, and so (in general) you should stick with the 10 second default and then when you see the message "Missed 5 keepalives, taking LCP down" you should then verify that the line is clear of errors or drops.
