connecting a cisco 678 to a Catalyst 3512

I am try to get a small office up running a Cisco 678 ADSL router connected through a a Cisco Catalyst 3500 series switch. If I plug a PC directly in the router it works fine but when I plug the switch into the router, I get no connection from the router. I have tried both a X-over cable and a straght through cable with the same results

What is the interface configured as on the 3512 as? Do a sh int fastethernet x/y and see if the interface is up/up

the port goes up when first connected the goes down. the port is administratively up.
