I am interested in finding out if the 3540 will be able to support multipoint conferences using the soon to be ratified H.264 standard. If yes, has Cisco developed a timeline for the support of H.264? Will the 3540's hardware need to upgraded to support H.264?

3540 supports H.261 and H.263 video encoding standards. The new 2.0 version of the software claims support for H.263+ and H.263++ also. As of now, H.264 support is not announced by CIsco.

H.264 support is currently being engineered. It is not yet known whether or not this will require a h/w upgrade. Stay tuned for announcements in this regard

Version 3.5.24 has support for H.264, however this only applies to conferences using resources on the MCU board only (i.e. voice activated conferences and asymmetric continuous presence).
Software Version 3.0.0.12 of the 3540 and 3526 gateway has support for H.264.
The only major component remaining that requires support for H.264 is the EMP, which I would expect to see in the next 3 months.
