What kind of routing performance can I get when I use Cisco IOS NAT?

Hello,

I want to know what kind of routing performance can I get when I use Cisco IOS NAT?

The following cco say IOS NAT supports CEF, Fast-switch and Process switch.

Q. What kind of routing performance can I expect when I use Cisco IOS NAT?

A. Cisco IOS NAT supports Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF) switching, Fast-switching and of course Process switching.

Performance depends on a number of factors `type of application and it's type of traffic--is it embedding IP Addresses, do multiple messages get exchanged that need to be inspected, does it require a specific Source Port or negotiate one, number of translations, what else is running on the box at the time, and of course the type of platform and processor.

In my environment as follow...

Cat5509 w/RSM w/VIP (IOS 12.0(24))

NAT outside -> FDDI PA on the VIP (2port)

NAT inside -> vlan interface (GbE on Cat5k SVM)

Is this cef? fast? process?

What difference decide the switching algorithm?

And what performance(pps) can I get in my NAT environment?

I want to get the performance of NAT nearly 200Mbps.

You cant get CEF performance, unless you enable CEF on your equipment.

I confirmed that the NAT packets were fast switch, but first packet of flow and ftp control packets were process switch.

The "sh int stat" command was very useful for my test.
