We have just installed a new Catalyst 4506 switch w/ IOS 12c. I am trying to get our Surf Control server to Monitor and Block inappropriate websites. SurfControl requires you to configure a mirrored port with read and write permission for the SurfControl WF server.
I cannot find out how to create a READ/WRITE mirroring port. I basically just want to know what commands I need to execute on the switch to make this work. Hopefully someone can explain how to do this point me to a simple, clear technical doc.
Thanks,
Todd Rammer

Todd,
You need to configure SPAN. Check this link.

Thanks, I have this document. I understand how to configure the span. But does that automatically make the mirroing port READ/WRITE? Or just READ?
My goal is for the SurfControl interface to be able to mirror and monitor internet traffic. I also want to make that same port be able to send responses to the LAN workstations.
Or is WRITE referred to by a different term? Sorry, I'm very new to the Cisco stuff.
Thanks again.

Well the information again is right there inside the same document.

Check the above link (just a target into the same link). By default you cannot send packets on to the network, on the SPAN port. But you do have the option of enabling it, using the "ingress" option on the monitor command.
Hope that helps!

Thanks, that makes sense now. I was sure about the terminology.
