Gigabit Ethernet to Server - MTU Increase needed?

I have a backup server connected via Gigabit ethernet to a Catalyst 8540 switch. The switch end of the link is error free, however the server end is registering RX overload errors and the backups are unreadable.

Would increasing the MTU from 1500 to 2000 have any adverse affect and/or is this something that is recommended in gigabit connectivity?

Jumbo Frames are a good thing. Make sure the MTUs agree on both ends (though it is a one-way negotiation, some drivers use the receives side MTU to set the output MTU). Maybe bump your NIC's input buffers as well.

The usual stuff also applies: update your NIC drivers to current, make sure the NIC is in a slot that is not sharing interrupts and DMA with another high-demand device, check the cable for proper pinout and excellent condition (no kinks, twists, stretches, nicks in the jacket, strain relief, minumum bend radius, etc).
