server1 can ping host2, but not host1!

Environment: host1 and host2 are both on the same 2950. 2950 is 2nd of 3 in a stack; 1st 2950 has a 1000LX uplink to a 4003. 4003 has 1000LX connection to another 4003, which is 1000LX to a 6000. 6000 to another 4000 via 1000LX, then 1000SX to a 3508. Server1 is 1000SX on same 3508. Network is a flat, class B, all on one vlan.

Problem: host1 cannot ping server1, but host2 can. Packet capture of host1 shows ICMP Echo Request from server, and ICMP Echo Reply from host1. Packet capture on server1 shows multiple ICMP Echo Requests from server1, but no ICMP Echo Replies from host1. Works fine with host2. Host1 also works fine with all other servers. What the ...?

TIA

Have you tried putting host1 on a different port or using different cabling?

T:

If the hosts are statically addressed, make sure that the subnet masks are all set the same. I've seen this behavior when subnet masks were inconsistent.
