I read that the 1900 switch only run Dynamic Inter-Switch Link (DISL). Does that mean that I cannot trunk between a 1900 and non cisco switch, since I would need to use 802.1q.
Does the 2820 only use DISL.

That's exactly what that means. And you can only trunk on the 100 MB ports. I am pretty sure that the 2820 will also only suport ISL trunking.
I htink if you want to use 1dotq trunking, you need a min. of either a 2900 XL model (the newer versions with 8 MB memory and entreprise edition software, 2912XL for example), or a Cat 2950. The Cat 2950 will onyl do idotq trunking I believe.
Good luck,
Joe

I agree.
2900XL and 3500XL are able to trunk on both ISL and 802.1q.
But most of them are End-of-sale already, see
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/prod_category_end_of_life.html.
Cat3550,2970 and 3750 also enables both ISL and 802.1q.

Milan
