Hi

I’ve 2 separate sites across wan link and Callmanager sit in the central site. Each site have own device pool. Within the device pool use G711 codec and between them use G729 codec.

I’m confused about MTP and Transcoder functionality. Can anyone please explain to me when situation the MTP and Transcoder start work?

Thanks,

Nitass

MTP is used to terminate to G711 end points. This is used when one end point doesn't support services like Hold, Transfer; eg. H.323 ver1.

Transcoder is used to change codec formats; from G711 to G729, G711 to G723 etc. It is used when you have an end point (say an IVR) in Central Site which supports only G711 codec and you want the Remote site end points to use G729 to the IVR; In this case, the transcoder in Main Site will receive the G729 packets from Remote Site convert it to G711 and send it to IVR and vice versa. A transcoder also functions as an MTP.
