when I use pat, does each machine use the ip address of the router and then a port number ?

In theory yes. You have to configure NAT on the router and then enable nat overload for PAT to happen. Then it uses whatever address you specify in the NAT pool as its 'public outside' address. All the connections it creates uses that address with a port number appeneded to it.
