when I use pat, does each machine use the ip address of the router and then a port number ?

Overloading A form of dynamic NAT that maps multiple unregistered IP addresses to a single registered IP address by using different ports. Known also as PAT (Port Address Translation), single address NAT or port-level multiplexed NAT.

In theory yes. You have to configure NAT on the router and then enable nat overload for PAT to happen. Then it uses whatever address you specify in the NAT pool as its 'public outside' address. All the connections it creates uses that address with a port number appeneded to it.
