Usually the FTP server logs are the best place to look to figure out this sort of thing. timeout suggests to me that either the initial control channel connection failed (tcp port 21) or that the data channel connection failed. The latter is often caused by the client or server [or intermediate device, like a firewall] not supporting the same type of data channel (pasv/active). anyway, check the server logs first and let us know what they say. Do you at least see a successful login?
