rx_soft_overflow_err on Fast Ethernet interface

I am seeing input errors on a Fast Ethernet interface on my 3725 router

running IOS version 12.3(17a):

100204623 packets input, 1244960943 bytes

Received 2913690 broadcasts, 0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles

33006 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored

0 watchdog

I am also seeing the "rx_soft_overflow_err" driver counter increase on the

same Fast Ethernet interface:

Number of Transmitter Hang = 0

tx_more_col_err= 0 tx_one_col_err= 0

tx_exc_collision_err= 0 tx_late_collision_err= 0

tx_underrun_err= 0 tx_error_intr= 0

rx_soft_overflow_err= 39622 rx_overflow_err= 0

I believe the two problems are related, but I am not sure of the best way to

go about troubleshooting the problem. Can anyone provide insight into what

the problem may be and how to correct it?

Thanks.

"rx_soft_overflow_err" indicates, the interface in question is seeing incoming packet rate is greater than what the router can handle. I would suspect bursts of traffic causing this. Check on whats connected to this interface and for traffic rates when the error is incrementing.
