Laptop Console-ing [No 9 Pin Serial]

Hi,

Hope this is an ideal forum for this post!

I am basically looking at buying a laptop and would need to use it to console to Switches / Routers using the rollover cable etc.

However, I notice most laptops dont come with the 9 pin serial port anymore.

Is there a way of using a laptop still without the serial port, i.e through hyper terminal maybe use a usb - serial converter? If so what is out there? Is anyone in this situation and if so what have they done? to be able to do this?

Thanks

Steve

Hi,

Yes there are USB-serial convertors.

But some don't support break sequences though.

we used a DSE (Dick Smith Electronics) one that works as a charm;

but these are not available all over the world I reckon ;-)

After installing, you can connect to the com port with Hyper terminal
