Opening ports for ACT on model 1841

I am trying to open up a port to allow net users to sync a ACT database. When I make changes to the firewall and then applyu the changes I get a connection lost error. SDM lost connection to router because of a communication error. Router freezes up, no internet access and I have to power-cycle.

Hello,

when you say ACT, does that mean Symantec ACT! ? What changes are you making, and which firewall do you have ?

Depends on what changes yopu made to the firewall. Sounds like you applied restrictions to the interface where SDM was coming in, thereby locking SDM out.

Anyway: ACT sharing is the same as NETBIOS share management, I would recommend you use a VPN solution for that, since punching a NETBIOS hole allows anyone on the inetrnet to mount the drive, and anyone else to monitor the unencrypted NETBIOS stream.

Better to look into the VPN capabilities of the 1841.
