For dsl users, should the line protocol continue to go up/down ?
I'm constantly getting up/down between several DSL modems connecting to a Cisco 7200 DSL router.
The following settings are verified correct on Zoom ADSL modems:
user
password
vpi
vci
multiplexing method is LLC
encap is ppp with chap
(Could CHAP cause a problem with PAP?, or will CHAP accept negotiations with PAP ?)
The config on the Cisco 7200 router is
interface ATM2/0.5 multipoint
range Business-BE pvc 5/100 5/199
class-range Business-BE3
ubr 1536
encapsulation aal5snap
protocol ppp Virtual-Template1
pvc-in-range 5/100
encapsulation aal5snap
protocol ppp Virtual-Template1
interface Virtual-Template1
ip unnumbered FastEthernet0/0
peer default ip address pool jcsn_dsl01
ppp authentication pap
here are the messages
*Mar 3 18:08:23: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Virtual-Access35, changed state to
up
*Mar 3 18:12:02: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Virtual-Access35, changed state to
down
*Mar 3 18:14:21: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Virtual-Access402, changed state t
o down
*Mar 3 18:14:27: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Virtual-Access402, changed state t
o up
Thanks for any suggestions

Hello,
not sure if this helps, but do you have 'ppp pap sent-username' configured ? Without that, PAP won't work...

Thanks.
I'm using radius for authentication and that's working fine
So, I don't think the problem is "sent username" because the users are all connecting fine.
They hold the connection but only have intermittant drops.
They automatically re-sync within 10 seconds
Only the line protocol drops
Any other thoughts ?
Thanks again

What is the status of the LED's on your device? Do you have a successful Carrier Detect?
Line protocol errors usually mean that the DSL modem is unable to train successfuly with the ISP DSLAM. Plug out the RJ 11 jack from your modem, turn it off and turn it back on again and ensure that the LED's on the front panel are in their expected states.
