Hello,

"ping" has some CLI options and is one command. Usually "extended ping" refers to ping and the enter, which will prompt you for all possible options. Among them are things like source interface, packet size, and also path recording.

Hi,

If you are after the IP address of every router along the path, you need to use traceroute.

The "record route" option in ping will also provide that information, provided that the destination is less than 9 hops away.

The difference between using the Record option of this command and using the traceroute command is that, the Record option of this command not only informs you of the hops that the echo request (ping) went through to get to the destination, but it also informs you of the hops it visited on the return path. With the traceroute command, you do not get information about the path that the echo reply takes. The traceroute command issues prompts for the required fields. Note that the traceroute command places the requested options in each probe; however, there is no guarantee that all routers (or end nodes) will process the options.

HTH,

Bobby
