802.1Q and dot1Q question

Hi

I have doubt on 802.1Q and dot1q. What is the differece between these two and which one is the layer 2 protocol??

Hi Gopal,

They are one and the same thing...dot1q is simply used as an abbreviation for 802.1q.

Gopal,

What I am saying is that there is no difference between saying 802.1q and dot1q - they refer to the same thing.

The IEEE 802.1q specifies a 4-byte header which can be used in order to tag ethernet frames in order to associated them with a virtual LAN. The actual VLAN ID is 12 bits, giving you a theoretical maximum of 4096 VLANs.

Hi,

802.1Q & dot1q one at same.

802.1Q its IEEE standard .

When you are trying to configure on switch command is dot1q
